Life of Travel: Episode 1 (Gran Canaria)

Derek A Life of Travel 12 Comments

It’s video time.

From here in my living room in the Canary Islands, I’ve put together a video this morning.

In Part 1, I provide a short update on exactly where I am, what I’ve been up to and what’s next as I continue my 18 year adventure around the world.

In Part 2, I answer some of the interesting travel questions I’ve received from readers over the past week. Topics include…

– how to access funds while traveling
– how long it takes for a blog to start earning money
– would I recommend the Maldives or Seychelles for snorkeling/diving
– getting the most out of a short trip
– dealing with friendships and relationships while constantly traveling
– finding work while traveling
– how I handle bribes
– the best ways to meet people in new destinations

…and more.

I hope you enjoy the video! (All feedback welcome.)

I am a 69 year old woman who has been travelling alone to Thailand for the last ten years. I plan on exploring new places soon. Unfortunately even though I am in great health my medical insurance is prohibitive. Do you know of any sites that could help solve this problem.

Hey Joan – There really is no solution I know of. You can always get travel insurance separately through a company such as World Nomads or IMGlobal or Travel Guard. Then you would be covered while out of the country and the cost shouldn’t be too bad.

There is nothing wrong with “Wandering Derek” .

I’ve been wandering since 1983 after buying a one way ticket to Singapore to look for work in the oilfields of South East Asia. Traded in my Samaonite suite case for a backpack after meeting Backpackers in Singapore. And I traded in my backpack for 14 years of cruising on yachts. (All named Wanderlust). Then switched back to backpacks again.

    And I’m still Wandering

Ha, definitely nothing wrong with Wandering Derek as you have proven! Sounds like some great adventures you’ve had…not many people have been out there traveling around for that amount of time. I have no doubt you wouldn’t trade it for anything!

My wife, Adrienne, and I will begin our travels in early 2018. After reading many blog posts across the internet, I found your video refreshing and informative. Looking forward to learning more from you in preparation for our departure.

NIce video. I’m all about using ATM’s and my Credit Cards as much as possible. I never use currency exchange places, and don’t know why people do when they’re in popular places. The best rates are always from the ATMs, lol

The best rates are from the ATMs for sure, but only if your bank doesn’t charge you a fee to take the money out and if the local ATM doesn’t charge a fee either. So in some countries, it still can make sense to exchange cash that take from somewhere without fees.

Good one, Derek! I’ve recently started to follow you and I will definitely keep doing this. So many valuable tips in this video, exactly what I need during my round the world trip. Just curious…have you ever wanted to settle down completely during this 18 years of travelling? Btw: good audio and video quality! Cheers!
