If you plan to stay in the Thamel neighborhood of Kathmandu, the main hangout for travelers for the past 50+ years in this city, you’ll find endless accommodation options.
On my latest visit, I ended up at the Gaju Suite Hotel, a budget hotel in Kathmandu that I found online, right on the main Thamel Marg road. The reason I went with this particular place is that I was feeling somewhat under the weather after being in India for the previous month and I really needed a room where I could relax, that was comfortable enough to work in and that was conveniently located for when I could muster the strength to head outside for meals and some activities.
And Gaju Suites Hotel did indeed deliver. I actually didn’t end up with a room here. It turned out that the “Suites” part means that some of the rooms are actually apartments. While they have a variety of sizes, I landed in a good size pad complete with bedroom, living room and a kitchen with a dining area…all for $35 USD per night.
Split among two people, as I did, this is a real bargain.
I’m not sure you can find such a spacious setup in this city for that price, which also includes breakfast in the rooftop restaurant that offers views of the Himalayas in the distance.
Great staff, walking distance to cafes, restaurants, bars and shops and you can even walk to Durbar Square in less than 30 minutes too.
I didn’t see any of the other apartments but the online reviews are very positive. I couldn’t find any problem at all with my stay and again, I really enjoyed having the large space to rest and wind down in after walking around this hectic city.
So, for a budget hotel in Kathmandu, I can definitely recommend this place.
